Augustine of Hippo (Aurelius Augustinus)
lived c. 354-430

One of the most influential theologians for the duration of the Middle Ages and into the early modern era (he was a particular favorite of the reformer Martin Luther), Augustine of Hippo left his mark upon western theology, formulating the concepts of original sin and just war. Apart from his strictly theological works, which are many, he is known to have written what is considered the earliest work of auto-biography: the Confessions, which detail his conversion from a profligate and promiscuous youth to an ascetic churchman.
