Beatrice, or Beatrijis, of Nazareth was a Flemish Cistercian nun. Her writings constitute the first prose to be written in the vernacular Dutch language. When Beatrice was seven years old, her mother died, and her father sent her to live with the Beguines. Later, she joined the Cistercian order and became the first prioress of the Abbey of Our Lady of Nazareth in Nazareth near Lier in Brabant.
