Little else is known about Stephen of Ripon, author of the Life of St Wilfrid, an important source for eighth-century English history. The author, who names himself as “Stephen, a monk,” is sometimes identified with Aeddi or Eddius Stephanus, a singing-master whom Wilfrid brought to the monastery of Ripon which he had founded on the Irish Columban model; however, this identification has been questioned by more recent work.
