Eadmer of Canterbury
lived
c.
1060-1124
Eadmer was born in Anglo-Saxon England just before the Norman Conquest, possibly in 1064. While a monk at the Benedictine monastery of Christ Church in Canterbury, he came to know Anselm, who would be the subject of Eadmer’s main works, the Vita Anselmi and the Historia Novorum. A significant theological work by Eadmer was the De conceptione Sanctae Mariae, which argued for the Immaculate Conception. In 1121, he was nominated to the bishopric of St. Andrew’s but ultimately not assigned the position. TLM
