Alfred
(Alfred the Great; Aelfred)
King of Wessex; King of England
lived
849-899
Alfred, king of the West-Saxons, repulsed the Danish invasion in 878 thereby unifying the Anglo-Saxons and becoming the first king of England. In addition to his literary patronage, which involved gathering an educated circle of men of his court, Alfred himself translated Latin works into Old English, such as Gregory the Great’s Pastoral Care, Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy, and others.
