John of Salisbury
(Johannes Parvus)
lived
c.
1115-1180
Although John was born in Salisbury, he moved to Paris at an early age where he studied arts, philosophy and theology under masters such as Peter Abelard and William of Conches. After a few years at the papal Court at Rome, John was appointed secretary to Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury, who sent him on diplomatic missions to the Holy See. Because of his defense of the rights of the Church, John was forced into exile from England in 1163, during which time he wrote the philosophic works Policraticus and Metalogicus. Thomas Becket followed him soon after until they made peace with the Holy See and king of England. John became treasurer of Exeter Cathedral in 1174 and Bishop of Chartres from 1176 until his death in 1180. TLM
