The fourth-century bishop and doctor of the Church was known for his learning, including familiarity with Greek texts, and wrote many theological treatises. He was involved in conflict with the Roman emperors of his day as well as adherents of the Arian heresy in Milan. He authored hymns, Biblical commentaries, letters, and some sermons.
