Reported to have converted after a dissolute and promiscuous youth, Angela of Foligno was one of the most important female mystics and theologians of the later Middle Ages. In her later life, she gathered a number of male and female Franciscan tertiaries with whom she lived in a community, devoted to poverty and penitence. For further information, please see:
