Saint, Archbishop of Canterbury
lived
c.
1033-1109
Anselm of Canterbury, not to be confused with the eighth-century St Anselm, was a Benedictine monk at Bec before his election as Archbishop of Canterbury. He was an important proponent of Gregorian reform in England, including the issue of lay investiture which resulted in conflict with Henry I of England. He is the author of numerous theological and philosophical works, including the Proslogion, containing his famous ontological proof of the existence of God. For more information, see:
