Gottfried von Strassburg is the author of the Middle High German romance Tristan. Though he died before completing the final fifth of this grand romance, it is still considered to be one of the greatest literary accomplishments of the German Middle Ages. Little is known about Gottfried’s life or education but it is clear from his writing that he was a very cultured man, well read in Latin, French, and German literature. In his romance he also demonstrates a surprisingly detailed knowledge of music and hunting.
