Comments:
Eadmar was archbishop’s close companion for the last 15 years of Anselm’s life. The first half of his life of Anselm was written down during the archbishop’s life; Anselm eventually demanded that the biography be destroyed; however, one copy was saved and completed after the archbishop’s death. Southern addresses the complicated manuscript history in a companion volume to the Life of Anselm, St. Anselm and his Biographer, published by Cambridge University Press in 1962. Apparatus include index; tables illustrating the development and diffusion of the work; an appendix of materials contained in only one manuscript.
Introduction Summary:
Introduction (ix-cciv) discusses the composition, manuscripts, publication history, and orthography of the Life of Anselm.
