Abbo of Fleury was a Benedictine monk. Before he became the Abbot of Fleury, near Orleans, France, he spent two years in England helping Archbishop Oswald of York to reform English monasteries. It was during this time that he learned the story of the martyrdom of St. Edmund and wrote this work. Edmund was king of East Anglia from 855 to 870. He died defending his country and religion from pagan Viking raiders. His burial site gives its name to the famous abbey Bury St. Edmunds. The Latin text, with no introductory material or scholarly apparatus, can be found on the Latin Library website.
