This is the second book of Gregory’s Dialogos, a collection of narratives. It tells the life of St. Benedict, the creator of the Benedictine Rule, which is the foundation of Western Monasticism. Gregory the Great, who was himself a monk before becoming pope, had an enormous influence on the development of Catholic liturgy, the theology of penance, and the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons. A complete translation of Gregory’s Life of St. Benedict can be found on the Internet Medieval Sourcebook website.
