Comments:
The Franciscan St. Bonaventure, along with the Dominican Thomas Aquinas, was one of the major scholastic theologians of the 13th century, influencing the way in which theology was conducted and taught at the universities of Europe. This volume contains an English-language edition of Bonaventure’s influential Commentary on the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes, one of the Wisdom books. The Latin text may be found
Introduction Summary:
The editors’ lengthy (51 pp) introduction examines Bonaventure’s exegetical method in the Commentary on Ecclesiastes, noting that his exegesis tends to focus upon the literal sense of the biblical text and to use quaestiones, or questions posed upon the text in accordance with the scholastic method, all 34 of which the editors summarize. The editors consider Bonaventure’s sources, which include his contemporaries High of St. Victor and Hugh of St. Cher. They also provide a very useful translation of Bonaventure’s text of Ecclesiastes, which they note varies considerably from the New Revised Standard Edition.
