Comments:

Adso was the abbot of Montier-en-Der, and the author of many saints’ lives. This volume contains an edition of several of those lives, including those of Frodobertus, seventh-century founder of the abbey of Montier-la-Celle; Walbertus, seventh-century abbot of Luxeuil; Mansuetus, the first bishop of bishop of Toul; Basle, a monk of Verzy and a hermit; and Bercharius, abbot of Montier-en-Der. This edition also includes indices of scriptural citations, authors, rhetoricians, miracles, and names.

Introduction Summary:

The editor’s lengthy (68pp) French introduction provides an overview of Adso’s career as abbot and hagiographer. The editor places the five vitae contained in this volume within the context of Adso’s other hagiographical work, and discusses his literary technique throughout. Additionally, each individual life is preceded by a brief introduction which discusses the manuscripts in which the text survives, and upon which the edition is based.
