Comments:
Bishop Arculf undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in the late 7th Century. His journey was recorded by Admonan of Iona, an Irish saint. Arculf traveled extensively through Israel, and describes the various churches and holy sites he encountered in detail. The book includes maps and diagrams to illustrate what Arculf describes. The full text of the book, along with some additional introductory and interpretive material, can be found on the Pilgrimage to Jerusalem Website, which supplements a seminar course taught at Colorado State University, Pueblo.
Introduction Summary:
The introduction discusses what little is known of Bishop Arculf, the contemporary significance and reception of this work, and the translator’s method. In addition to the introduction of the book, the website has a separate introduction which gives some biographical background of Adomnan, an itinerary of Arculf’s journey, and a history of the written work itself.
